Exclusive interview: New York artist Kevin Berlin discusses new work presented in Taranto
at the National Finals of Miss Motors
About Kevin Berlin:
Kevin Berlin is a famous artist known for his works of Ballerinas, paintings, sculptures and
performance that confront important social issues. His works are in collections of famous collectors such as Hilary and Bill Clinton, Kim Basinger, Luciano Pavarotti. The artist exhibits and travels all over the world.
About Miss Motors:
Miss Motors is an international model search based in Taranto, Italy, which elects an ambassador
for highway safety. The winner, Sofi Baranovskaya, was presented with a painting by Kevin Berlin entitled, Selfie, from his new series of artworks about Millennials.
About Elisabetta Zerial:
Elisabetta Zerial is a curator and art historian. She recently organized Giorgio de Chirico and
Giorgio Morandi exhibition at the Modern Art Museum, Shanghai. Zerial is the Assistant Director
of Aria Art Gallery based in Florence and London.
Elisabetta Zerial: What is an American artist doing in Taranto at the National Final of Miss
Motors?
Kevin Berlin: The answer is both personal and professional. Bruno Dalto, the founder of Miss
Motors, is a longtime friend. When he invited me this year to be president of the jury, I could hardly
say no. I have been involved with Miss Motors for ten years and it is very unique as an international
model search. Not only does it focus on beauty and fashion, two subjects close to my heart, but it
also selects an ambassador to promote highway safety. Every participant is educated on this topic
and the winner is a spokesperson with responsibilities on an issue that affects all of us.
EZ: Your artworks are about important social issues, such as the global financial crisis or the
extinction of endangered species. What's the connection between Miss Motors and your new
artwork?
KB: You may have noticed that participants of Miss Motors are all from the Millennial generation, or as the Italians say "Generazioni Y." My new work is about "Selfies" and explores how people use their cellphones to connect with the outside world. In our culture, selfies seem to be getting more and more out of control. It seems like there's no real limit to what someone is willing to do to get more "likes" on social media. I have taken the opportunity, here in Taranto, to interview Miss Motors contestants about their personal views on selfies and Generation Y. These responses have helped inspire new ideas for my artwork.
EZ: Do you really think that artwork can solve some of the world's problems?
KB: Yes, but the artist has limited responsibility. Like a journalist, the artist serves as a witness. It's not my job to say what is right or what is wrong, but rather just to say "this is what I see." I have found if you try to tell a contemporary audience what to think, they usually stop listening. My job is just to get people talking and start a conversation, a dialogue. In this way I see a connection between the finalists of Miss Motors as voices of their generation.
EZ: Tell us about the artwork you donated to the winner of Miss Motors.
KB: The winner received a small but important work for the development of this new series. The work is gouache and pencil on hand-cut watercolor paper entitled Selfie. Its Renaissance style frame was handmade in Florence, Italy. Like all of my work, it was painted from life and follows the tradition of narrative painting; paintings that tell a story. I hope the painting will add to the winner's many exciting memories of this week.
EZ: Taranto is a city famous for sight-seeing and cuisine, as well as the Miss Motors pageant...
KB: Besides the incredible summer weather in late September, photoshoots at the fortress, Castello Aragonese, and window shopping in the historic center, I love all the wines of Puglia and I had the best bowl of zuppa di vongole of my life! I couldn't imagine a more memorable weekend.
EZ: What do you have planned after Taranto?
KB: I just had a major solo show at Livingstone Gallery in The Hague, followed up by a curated drawing exhibition at Art The Hague art fair. The show was called "Berlin In Berlin" and featured more than forty works including painting, photography and installation. It was based on my recent residency in Berlin, Germany. Coming up next, I will be participating in Art Basel Miami Beach in December.

Elisabetta Zerial: Che cosa fa un artista Americano a Taranto al concorso di bellezza Miss
Motors?
Kevin Berlin: La risposta è sia personale che professionale. Bruno Dalto, il fondatore di Miss
Motors, è da tempo mio amico. Quando mi ha invitato quest’anno in qualità di presidente della
giuria, non ho potuto dire di no. Sono stato coinvolto per dieci anni con Miss Motors ed è unico
come concorso di bellezza. Non è solo una questione di bellezza e moda, due soggetti a me cari, ma è anche una selezione di un’ambasciatrice per la promozione della sicurezza stradale. Ogni
partecipante è educato a questa tematica e la vincitrice è la portavoce di questo problema sociale,
importante per tutti noi.
EZ: Tutte le tue opere affrontano importanti tematiche sociali, come la crisi economica mondiale o specie in via d’estinzione. Qual è la relazione tra Miss Motors e la tua nuova produzione artistica?
KB: Come puoi notare le partecipanti di Miss Motors fanno parte della “Generazione Y”. I miei nuovi lavori vertono sui “Selfie” ed esplorano come le persone utilizzino il loro cellulare per connettersi con il mondo esterno. Nella nostra cultura, i selfie sembrano portarci sempre di più fuori controllo. Sembra quasi che non ci sia un reale limite ad avere più “like” nei social media. Ho avuto la possibilità qui a Taranto, di intervistare le partecipanti di Miss Motors sulla loro visione dei Selfie e la loro generazione. Le loro risposte mi hanno ispirato per il mio lavoro.
EZ: Pensi veramente che le opera d’arte possano risolvere alcuni del problem mondiali?
KB: Certo, ma l’artista ha una responsabilità limitata. Come un giornalista, l’artista è un testimone. Non è mio compito dire cosa sia giusto o sbagliato, ma dire “questo è quello che vedo”. Ho scoperto che se provi a decidere cosa deve pensare il pubblico di oggi, probabilmente smette di ascoltarti. Il mio lavoro è di permettere di parlare e iniziare una conversazione, un dialogo. In questo modo vedo una connessione tra le partecipanti di Miss Motors come voci della loro generazione.
EZ: Raccontaci dell’opera che hai donato alla vincitrice di Miss Motors.
KB: La vincitrice ha ricevuto un piccolo ma importante quadro per lo sviluppo di questa nuova serie. L’opera è una gouache a matita acquerellata su foglio tagliato a mano, intitolata Selfie, con una cornice rinascimentale fatta a mano a Firenze. Come tutto il mio lavoro, è stata dipinta dalla vita e segue la tradizione della narrazione italiana; i dipinti che raccontano una storia. Spero che il quadro venga aggiunto ai bei ricordi della vincitrice.
EZ: Taranto è una città famosa per I suoi panorami e la cucina, non solo per il concorso di bellezza di Miss Motors...
KB: Più dell’incredibile clima estivo della fine di settembre, photoshoots alla fortezza, il Castello Aragonese, un giro per la città nel centro storico, amo tutti Ii vini pugliesi e ho mangiato la più buona zuppa di vongole della mia vita! Difficile immaginare un week end più indimenticabile.
EZ: Che programmi hai dopo Taranto?
KB: Ho appena esposto a una mostra personale alla Livingstone Gallery all’Aia, che ha seguito una curatela nella mostra di disegni alla fiera di Art The Hague. La mostra era intitolata “Berlin in Berlin” e sono stati presentati più di quaranta opera inclusi quadri, fotografia e installazioni. Opere realizzate durante la mia residenza artistica a Berlino, Germania. La prossima tappa sarà partecipare ad Art Basel Miami Beach a dicembre.
