Livingstone gallery, The Hague, Netherlands, presents a group show of American artists who, each in their own right, make us part of the American Dream. These days this utopian vision seems more under pressure than ever. With a worldly view and a social conscience artists like Robert Rauschenberg and Sol LeWitt visualize the notion that this dream should be accessible to everyone. By shipping an entire condemned Detroit house appropriately called The White House to the Art Rotterdam art fair in 2016, Ryan Mendoza showed us that for many the American dream turned into a nightmare. With his Tiger Paintings and his series on The Berlin Wall, Kevin Berlinshows us that a social conscience has survived in the artworld. Actually, art seems the only way for the American Dream to survive. Louise Bourgeois said it best: "Art is a guaranty of sanity."
Livingstone gallery presenteert tevens een groepstentoonstelling van Amerikaanse kunstenaars die ons ieder op hun eigen wijze deelgenoot maken van de American Dream. In de huidige omstandigheden staat deze utopische visie steeds meer onder druk. Met een wereldse blik en maatschappelijke bewogenheid gaven kunstenaars als Robert Rauschenberg en Sol LeWitt uiting aan het idee dat de droom voor iedereen bereikbaar moest zijn. Met het verschepen van het White House uit Detroit naar Art Rotterdam in 2016 liet Ryan Mendoza zien dat voor velen in Amerika deze droom in een nachtmerrie was veranderd. Met zijn Tiger Paintings en zijn serie over de Berlijnse Muur laat Kevin Berlin zien dat ons maatschappelijk bewustzijn het wel heeft overleefd in de kunstwereld. Kunst lijkt de enige weg om de American Dream te behouden en te blijven uitdragen. Louse Bourgeois vatte het al goed samen: "Art is a guaranty of sanity."
